Fireworks took on a new meaning this Independence Day when the judiciary became an official target of the other two branches of Missouri government.

The past legislative season was filled with attempts by lawmakers to unravel Missouri’s respected nonpartisan court plan. More recently the governor has demanded a panel of potential Supreme Court nominees who meet his political litmus test.

The Adam Smith Foundation, a newly minted conservative think tank, announced its intent to "stop judicial activism" as displayed "by liberal trial attorney’s (stet) who are working with Judge Teitelman and Judge Wolf to rewrite the Missouri Constitution."

Governor Blunt’s recent rant echoed similar sentiments.

It seemed out-of-character for this student of history. And undemocratic on every level.

Our state faces major challenges. Transportation funding could run out. Higher education has been mowed over by anti-stem cell forces. Primary education is in disarray.

If we allow a coterie of right-wing fanatics to hold our elected officials hostage and take the judicial system as prisoner, we will fail history. And the future.
